Did Jesus Really Die? The Answer to Islam Scholars By Bro. Duane

The death of Jesus Christ on the Cross is important to Christians since it reminds us of the greatest gift given by God as forgiveness for the sins of mankind. However, this is denied by our Muslim brothers since they do not believe Jesus died on the cross.

Islam defenders often use Surah 4:157.

And because of their saying (in boast), “We killed Messiah ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah,” – but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of ‘Iesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man), and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary) ]: (Surah An-Nisa’ 4:157)

But for me this is verse is weak basis for three reasons:

  1. Islam scholars do not have the same interpretation. Some say it was Judas replaced Jesus while others say It was Simon of Cyrene.
  2. Why is there no commentary from Hadith (Sahih al-Bukhari) about this?
  3. In Islam, Mary is highly respected but in this verse it appears Allah is fooling Mary because he allowed Mary to cry for someone crucified but he is not even related to her.

In the Arabic text of Surah 3:55, we can read clearly the Arabic word Mutawafikka whch according to Islam  scholars means Jesus did not die. But, if we ask even the highest experts in Arabic language they will say the meaning of Mutawaffika is “cause you to die.”

A book written by one Muslim scholar entitled The Qur’an and Its Interpreters: The House of ‘Imran Volume 2  will show here is what we can read on page 69.

I have a copy of this book and I will show you the screenshot.

“This view is reported on the authority of Ibn “Abbas and Wahb b. Munabbih who said, “God caused Jesus to die for three hours of the day, during which He raised him up to Him.”

Ibn ‘Abbas is the cousin of Muhhamad and Hadith even said Muhammad even prayed to Allah that Ibn ‘Abbas be given the wisdom to interpret the Qur’an.

Who said the report from Ibn ‘Abbas has authority? He said, “GOD caused Jesus to die for 3 hours of the day”.

THIS IS ABOUT THE OTHER PERSON WHO WAS CRUCIFIED ALONGSIDE JESUS.

Islam scholars do not see eye to eye regarding their interpretation about this man crucified with Jesus on the cross. Some Muslims say Judas Iscariot was that man. This was disproven since Judas was allegedly dead when Jesus was crucified. If Muslim scholars refer to the Book of Judas, this is a big falsehood and contradicts what is written in the Bible.

What about the claim of other Muslims that Simon of Cyrene was crucified?

Here is the verse:

“As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.27A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him.28n Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children,29for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.’30 At that time people will say to the mountains, ‘Fall upon us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’o31 for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?” 32Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be executed. The Crucifixion.p33When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left.q” (Luke 23:26-33)

The pronoun “him” refers to the closest previous noun (male) mentioned. That noun is Jesus since Simon was too far. The Roman soldiers were not foolish to crucify Simon of Cyrene because Jesus Christ cannot be mistaken for another man. He wore a crown of thorns. He was scourged. Everybody knew him as a prophet. Jewish priests who wanted to kill Jesus made sure the right person was crucified. Mary and John were below the cross of Jesus. It cannot be disputed Jesus and not Simon was crucified.
