“The condition for being ready for the encounter with the Lord is not only faith, but a Christian life rich in love for one’s neighbour,” Francis says at today’s Angelus. To the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope explains that “here lies the meaning of being wise and prudent: to not wait until the last moment of our life to work with God’s grace, but of doing so already now”.

The Pontiff also recalls the beatification of Father Vicente Queralt Lloret and 20 fellow martyrs, and José María Fernández Sánchez and another 38 fellow martyrs, which took place yesterday in Madrid. “Some of the new Blessed” he explains, “were members of the Congregation of the Mission: priests, brothers coadjutor, novices; others were lay members of the Association of the Miraculous Medal. All were killed in hatred of the faith during the religious persecution that took place during the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1937: we praise God for the great gift of these exemplary witnesses of Christ and the Gospel”.
