GOT DIALOGUE: A DISCUSSION ON JAMES 2:24

Here, I have a dialogue with a volunteer and in this excerpt, you can see that he agreed with my interpretation of James 2:24 that being justified by works has something to do with salvation. If you want to see the 7-page dialogue that we have, you can message us and I will give you the WORD file document.

so, when James pointed out that a man can’t be saved by dead faith (and Catholics have a different view on this one though we have the same conclusions), that’s the same on verse 24 when he said that a man is not justified by faith that is alone or faith that is dead…right?

• GotQuestions
James is referring back to that dead faith in verse 14 like you were saying?

• DCF
are you asking me?…I’m confused with your question mark at the end…haha

• GotQuestions
Yeah, well my conclusion for that passage is that faith and work have to go together

• GotQuestions
a person says that he is saved, but didn’t show work, his faith is dead

• GotQuestions
that’s what James is sayin

• GotQuestions
that’s why James says that not faith alone but works also

• DCF
ok…so the word Justified in verse 24 is actually saved or used in the context of salvation going back to verse 14…right?

• GotQuestions
it’s not same word, but yes it goes back to verse 14

• GotQuestions
meaning dead faith = faith without works

• DCF
ok…so in verse 24

• DCF
24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.

• DCF
do you believe that when the author said that a man is justified by works as a contrast to the dead faith that justification by works after a man is initially justified is related in salvation?

• GotQuestions
what do you mean

• GotQuestions
help me understand it better

• DCF
well, in verse 24, James made an argument

• DCF
1. a man is justified by works (whatever that means)

• DCF
2. a man is not justified by faith that is alone or faith that is dead

• DCF
and, because you agree with me that when St. james mentioned his second point that the concept of justification is related to the concept of salvation because it is a repetition of verse 14…

• DCF
if that is the case, can we read that consistently in verse 24 that a man is justified (in the context of salvation) by works and not by faith alone (or that a man is not saved by faith that is dead)?

• GotQuestions
Sure

• GotQuestions
i would not agree with man is solely justified work alone either

• GotQuestions
you have to bundle them together

• DCF
ahhh..that’s a strange, we don’t believe that a person is saved by work alone

• DCF
by the way, here in my country, it’s 11:25 pm, so, thanks for your time…

• GotQuestions
thanks

• GotQuestions
please come back and talk to us again

• DCF
bye and GOD BLESS
