YES, MARY WAS IMMACULATE pt1: A RESPONSE TO INC MINISTER

One of the dogmas of the Catholic Church is the belief that Mary is immaculately conceived. Immaculate conception doesn’t refer to the conception of Jesus. Rather, ang Immaculate conception ay tungkol sa conception ni Mary kung saan Mary is conceived without the stains of original sin. Tignan natin ang binanggit ni Pope Pius IX about this. Pope Pius IX said:
.
“We declare, pronounce, and define that the doctrine which holds that the most BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, in the FIRST INSTANCE of her CONCEPTION, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was PRESERVED FREE from ALL STAIN OF ORIGINAL SIN, is a doctrine revealed by God and therefore to be believed firmly and constantly by all the faithful [1] [emphasis added].”
.
However, maraming nagdidisagree sa idea ng immaculate conception tulad ng minister who made a post against this that caught my attention. He made a long post against the dogma, and for me to give a proper reply, I decided that I will divide my response into four parts. He said:
.
“NO AMOUNT OF SEARCHING into the Holy Scriptures will be able to yield any single scriptural text that supports the dogma of the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. The BIBLE is SILENT and says NOTHING ABOUT a WOMAN who was BORN WITHOUT ORIGINAL SIN (assuming that there is such a kind of sin) and who had lived a SINLESS LIFE [2] [emphasis added].”
.
Catholic Encyclopedia said:
.
“NO DIRECT or CATEGORICAL and STRINGENT PROOF of the dogma can be brought forward FROM SCRIPTURE [3] [emphasis added].”
.
Pero, the Encyclopedia believes in implicit evidence. In fact, the same Encyclopedia said:
.
“The sentence against the first parents was accompanied by the Earliest Gospel (Proto-evangelium), which put ENMITY BETWEEN the SERPENT and the WOMAN: “and I will put enmity between thee and the woman and her seed; she (he) shall crush thy head and thou shalt lie in wait for her (his) heel” (GENESIS 3:15) …God puts ENMITY BETWEEN HER AND SATAN in the SAME MANNER and measure, as there is ENMITY BETWEEN CHRIST and the SEED OF THE SERPENT. [3] [emphasis added].”
.
.
“GENESIS 3:15, however, DOES NOT PROVE this DOGMA. This verse plainly and obviously does not say anything of the dogma [2] [emphasis added].”
.
.
Genesis 3:15
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
.
For us to understand this, kailangan natin maunawaan kung ano ang meaning ng “enmity” at paano natin to iaapply kay Mary. Enmity represents hostility or hatred. In the New Testament, makikita natin that Jesus destroyed the enmity between God and us through His sacrifice in the cross (Ephesians 2:16). At the same time, alam natin na ang sacrifice ni Jesus ay nagbibigay ng grace sa atin. Even in the New Testament, binanggit na tayo ay children of wrath (Ephesians 2:3). Ibig sabihin, having enmity with God means na tayo ay conceived without the grace of God or we are conceived with stains of original sin, at dahil sa sacrifice ni Jesus, nagkaroon tayo ng opportunity to receive the grace of God. That concept is similar sa Genesis 3:15 kung saan sinabi na may enmity sa pagitan ng seed (Jesus) of the woman at sa seed ng serpent. The seed of the serpent represents us since we are conceived in the original sin while Jesus is sinless. If we can prove that the woman refers to Mary, then this is a proof that Mary is not conceived with stains of original sin.
.
At the same time, ang “seed” refers to the child or descendant tulad ng kung paanong si Abraham ay ang father of all nations and his children are called “seed” (Genesis 22:18). Bukod pa dun, the “seed” usually refers to male, and since ang binanggit dito ay woman instead of a man, this is a prophecy of the virgin birth. Blue-Letter Bible, a non-denominational Christian ministry, gave a commentary and said:
.
“The ULTIMATE SEED of the woman would be JESUS Himself. Therefore, we have in Genesis 3:15, the first promise of a Redeemer. It is the beginning of a long line of prophecies concerning the coming Messiah. The Promised One would be from the woman’s seed an indication of the eventual VIRGIN BIRTH OF CHRIST [4] [emphasis added].”
.
If Genesis 3:15 is a prophecy of the virgin birth, then this is a prophecy of Mary as well. If that’s the case, then klaro na si Mary ay naconceive without the stains of original sin tulad ni Jesus habang tayo ay naconceive with the stains of original sin. This just shows how Genesis 3:15 points to Immaculate Conception. Marami pang biblical passages ang magpoprove ng Immaculate Conception, but to save space, I think this will suffice especially since this is a response sa point niya kung saan sinabi niya na hindi naprove ng Genesis 3:15 ang Immaculate Conception. Before, I explained how this dogma is biblical from passages such as Luke 1:42 from the idea that Mary is the holiest among all women [5] [6]. Pinakita ko rin from my previous posts ang proof from Jeremiah 31:22 based on the concept that Mary is the New Earth [7]. If you want to see those posts for more in-depth explanation, kindly go to the references.
.
In my next post, titignan natin whether makikita ba ang Immaculate Conception sa Sacred Tradition by looking at the writings of the Early Church Fathers at sa ibang medieval theologians tulad ni St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Duns Scotus in response to his original post.
