September 30, 2025 a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Bogo City, Cebu, shaking homes, churches, and hearts across the Visayas. As of this morning, over 60 lives have been lost, hundreds injured, and thousands displaced. Entire towns—San Remigio, Medellin, Daanbantayan—have declared a state of calamity. Even heritage churches, symbols of faith and history, have crumbled under the force of nature.
When the Ground Shakes, Where Is God?
It’s a question many ask in moments like this. And the Church does not shy away from it. In the Psalms, we read:
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way.” — Psalm 46:1–2
Catholic teaching reminds us that suffering is never meaningless. In moments of disaster, we are invited to respond not with despair, but with solidarity, compassion, and prayer.
🛐 Faith in Action
The Archdiocese of Cebu has mobilized parishes for relief efforts. Catholic schools have suspended classes to ensure safety. Volunteers are gathering food, water, and medical supplies. President Marcos has deployed Cabinet secretaries to oversee aid distribution.
This is the Church at work—not just in liturgy, but in love.
✝️ A Call to Mercy and Mission
As Catholics, we are called to be first responders of grace. Whether through donations, prayers, or presence, we can be instruments of healing. Let this tragedy remind us:
- To build our lives not just on concrete, but on Christ.
- To cherish every moment with loved ones.
-
To be ready—not just physically, but spiritually.
